The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma paid her first official courtesy visit to the offices of the NEPAD Agency on Monday, September 30, 2013.
At Dr. Zuma’s first meeting with the CEO of the NEPAD Agency, Dr. Ibrahim A. Mayaki she highlighted various aspects of some of NEPAD’s premier programmes including CAADP and PIDA and emphasized the importance of the NEPAD Agency’s role as the technical body of the African Union and its role in the formulation of the AU’s Agenda 2063.
The Chairperson noted that the AU has designated 2014 as the Year of Agriculture and Food Security, and emphasized that she expects the NEPAD Agency to contribute positively towards the January 2014 Summit at which the Year will be officially launched. Dr. Mayaki responded by recommitting all of the Agency’s efforts to supporting the AU’s wider mission of promoting Africa’s development.
The CEO also took the opportunity to update the Dr. Zuma on the plans underway to relocate the headquarters of the NEPAD Agency from Midrand to Centurion. Subsequent to this meeting, the AU Chairperson met separately with board members of the NEPAD Business Foundation.
The AU Chairperson completed her visit with a short address to members of the NEPAD Agency’s staff. In her speech, she observed that while this courtesy visit was very short, it is her intention to return to Midrand before the end of this year in order to devote a morning to interact and engage with staff in greater depth.
